Blogger Getting Started Guide
In your first entry, answer these questions: What forms of new media do you use daily? How has new social media influenced your perspective of events? Are these positive or negative influences?
The
forms of new media that I use on a daily basis include: Facebook, Glide, text
messaging, Gmail, and Black Board to name a few. New social media has influenced
my perspective in the following ways. I find myself bombarded and bombarding
others with meaningful quotes that have lost their meaning. As you scroll down
the virtual pages of Facebook for example, you might find a quote by Gandhi followed,
by a picture of a half-naked woman, followed by a video of a man blowing his off.
There is always a plethora of worthy causes
that deserve time and attention; however, there are so many to choose from,
that one becomes over-whelmed and don’t choose anything at all. Because of
this, I find myself desensitized to many issues that we face as a people. The
beautiful English language has been butchered with acronyms such as lol
(laughing out loud), smh (shaking my head), and gm (good morning) as if Ebonics
wasn't bad enough.
Despite all of this, I do find this new media
to be convenient, informational, and it allows me to keep up with my family and
friends. This is not always a good thing; however.
Just as your friends and family can find you and
keep up with what you are doing, so can your rivals and people who don’t necessarily
wish you well. And don’t get me started on the ice water challenges!
As with anything in life, social media has its
positive points and its negative points. It is a personal choice as to what we
are willing to give up for what we gain in this virtual world today. As for
myself, I prefer to live in the virtual world, despite the consequences that
come along with it.
I totally agree with you that we are becoming more oblivious to a point of things that are happening around the world. I liked your line about Ghandi quotes, than a half naked woman and than the man. All of those things can overwhelm anyone because you're getting this constant bit of information in one swoop. The Ebonics comment was dead on as well because we are just butchering the english language. Sometimes I read through the posts on social media sites such as facebook, and I can hardly stand to read them. The grammar is so bad, the spelling is pretty bad, but the text language is dead on! Very good blog post.
ReplyDeleteHello Dilila,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response to my to my blog. The crazy thing is, I just saw a video on Facebook of a wreck in a foreign country, and the people were lying in the road dead and a mother and father was holding their child who was missing the top of his head and his brains were hanging out. The video was over two minutes long; however, once the mother of the little boy started rolling around on the ground and screaming to the top of her lungs, I could not take it a moment longer! It's crazy what you see on these social networks!
Mellissia - Yikes! I just read your comment above, and I know I would not like to view that. Social media takes away the gatekeeper function of editors in the sense that we can all share what we want - even horrific videos like you describe. We can also use whatever spelling and grammar rules that we'd like, but I think it does reflect on our intelligence. Do you think social media offers a good case study for the need for professional editors?
ReplyDeleteA part of me says yes, however, another part of me likes the freedom and shock value. It's kind of like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get in my Forrest Gump voice. See, I like that instead of feeling the need to properly cite the movie starring Tom Hanks, I can just say in my Forrest Gump voice and the credit is given to rightful owners. If too much regulation goes on, then some of this joy and freedom would be taken away. The greatest thing about social media is that you still have to click play to watch such a video. It is still a choice. Perhaps a content advisor should be put in place for content being posted just like with movies and ratings. This will be hard to regulate however, since anyone can make a video and post it at any time.
